Hospitals Pledge Net Zero Emissions By 2050

Hospitals in Massachusetts will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 – and eradicate them completely by 2050.

That’s the promise made by more than half of the hospitals in MA as they join 650 health care companies and organisations across the US.

Boston Medical Center President and CEO Kate Walsh urged hospitals to take the leading role in reducing emissions to address climate change concerns.

Climate Change

She said: “There is a real obvious and distinct connection between the climate change events that we’re seeing in our country and the health of the people who are affected by them.

“The most efficient square-foot is the one you never build!”

The pledges were made in support of the Biden administration drive to ‘mobilize’ the health industry.

U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, said: “Nobody should underestimate the importance of federal and private sector health care leaders joining together to address the impacts of climate change.”

Most hospitals, health insurance company’s and pharamacutical firms have already reduced fossil fuel use but they have pledged to go further as we approach 2030.

BayState Health, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Children’s Hospital, Mass General Brigham, Southcoast Health, Steward Health Care and Tufts Medicine have all agreed to cut emissions.
